Some places are so naturally part of our region that we easily overlook their importance. For us, the Pretziener Weir is such a place: familiar, impressive and closely connected to life on the Elbe. Anyone who stands between the mighty pillars and looks at the steel construction gets an idea of how much knowledge and work goes into this structure.
For us, it's about more than just a nice place to visit. Both of us, Susi and Ralf, are members of the “Weltkulturerbe im Salzlandkreis” support association and support the common cause of preserving the cultural heritage of our region and accompanying the Pretziener Weir on its way to becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A building that is still needed today
The Pretzien weir was built between 1871 and 1875. To this day it is an important part of flood protection for Schönebeck, Magdeburg and the neighboring areas. If it opens, part of the Elbe water can be channeled into the flood canal and bypass the cities in this way.
What appears from the outside to be a large bridge with pillars is therefore a sophisticated hydraulic engineering system. Its nine defense fields include a total of 324 movable defense panels. The construction combines historical engineering with a task that remains very specific for our region: protecting people and places from flooding. Data and background information from the State Office for Flood Protection.
That's exactly what makes the place special for us. History is not just on an information board here. It is located in a building that is still used and preserved.

Why we are involved together in the club
Our membership is conscious support for the region in which we live. We want special places to be preserved and their stories to remain understandable for the next generation. For us, this includes looking, talking about it and making others curious.
The support association supports the development of the World Heritage application for the Pretziener Weir. At the same time, his view extends beyond: the Pömmelte ring sanctuary and the Herrnhut settlement of Gnadau are also among the cultural monuments that the association is committed to. He combines the preservation of these places with the desire to bring their significance to a broader public. More about the club and its work.
With this article we as Susi and Ralf would like to show that we support this project together. What is crucial for us is that this piece of home has a future and that more people learn why it is important.
On the way to becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site
We would like the Pretziener Weir to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the future. An important step has already been taken: the building is on the German tentative list, i.e. the list of suggestions for possible future world heritage sites. The proposal has been at the UNESCO World Heritage Center since then January 29, 2024 recorded. Entry at UNESCO.
According to local information published in September 2026, the application for preliminary review is scheduled to be submitted in 2027. The aim is for recognition by 2031. This is one goal of the application process; Admission or a fixed recognition date is not yet guaranteed. Current outlook from the Schönebeck Tourist Information Office.
We hope that this path is successful and support it with our club membership. For us, recognition would be a special appreciation of what this building means for the region and the history of flood protection.

A place for meetings and shared memories
Our private pictures contain photos of the anniversary celebration on September 6th, 2025 and the family festival on September 13th, 2026. They show the weir from different perspectives: the construction up close, the festival area and encounters around the structure.
For us, such images fit a monument that remains part of today's life. A celebration creates an opportunity to take a closer look. Between conversations and family time, a familiar name becomes a place that has its own memory.
Our photos are personal snapshots. They show what we brought with us and do not replace a full event report or technical documentation.

Take a closer look with the family
When visiting with children, not every technical detail needs to be explained immediately. You can start with simple questions: Which parts move? Where would the water flow if there was an opening? Why are the pillars standing the way they are?
If you would like to know more, you can look for announced tours and events. The weir is also a destination for a detour from the Elbe cycle path. The on-site information and the approved areas always apply: This is a used hydraulic structure. An inspection during a festival does not mean that all areas are accessible at all times. Suggestions for a visit.
Our tip: Don't just take a photo and move on. Take your time to look at the details and ask yourself what work this building has done for our region to this day.
Preserving your homeland also means passing on your stories
For both of us, the Pretziener Weir is a good reason to rediscover our own surroundings. We support the path to becoming a world heritage site because the history of technology, landscape and people's lives come together here.
The application process will show whether UNESCO will award the title later. We already know that this place deserves our attention and support.
