Sometimes you don't need to travel far to discover something beautiful. Our spa park in Bad Salzelmen is a wonderful place for this: a piece of Schönebeck where green paths, old buildings and the history of salt come together. The graduation tower immediately catches the eye. If you take a closer look, you'll discover a lot more.

For us, this beautiful park is one of the places that deserves its place in the family blog. This article invites you to take a tour - from the historic spa area to the Solequell, with ideas for families and a look at the things you should know before your visit.

Why Bad Salzelmen is a special health resort

The history of the saltwater spa begins in 1802: on the initiative of the saltworks doctor Johann Wilhelm Tolberg, a bathhouse was set up here. Bad Salzelmen is therefore considered the oldest brine spa in Germany. Today's spa park developed from the spa business at that time. The brine connects the history of salt production with the later spa industry. On the history of the spa park.

The graduation tower: a landmark made of wood and blackthorn

The graduation tower was built between 1756 and 1765, initially 1,323 meters long; by 1777 it was expanded to 1,837 meters. Today around 300 meters of it are preserved. In the past, the system was supposed to increase the salt content of the brine: when it trickled down over brushwood, water evaporated before the more concentrated brine was further processed. So it was originally about salt production.

Its construction alone makes the building an exciting destination. The long walls, the wood and the densely layered branches tell of a time when salt production shaped the place. You can generally get to know the view from above as part of guided tours; You should ask in advance whether this is currently possible. History and function of the graduation tower.

Currently important: renovation and seasonal changes

Research status: November 5, 2026. SOLEPARK provides information about renovation work on the graduation tower. An interruption to the sprinkler system was announced for the work. That's why you shouldn't assume that the brine is currently running or that there are no restrictions on ascents. The information provided by the operator is decisive for the current operating status and tours. Current information from SOLEPARK.

The park also changes throughout the year. According to a message dated November 3, 2026, the “Bathing Children” figures were stored for the winter; They are supposed to return the following spring. This is a good example of why an older photo doesn't always show the current condition of a place. Note on the figures' winter break.

In the Kunsthof, salt history becomes something vivid

The Kunsthof includes the graduation tower, the brine tower, the Schausiedehaus and exhibition rooms in the Red House. Guided tours explain the connections between salt, saline and health resort. With show boiling you can clearly learn about salt production. The offer also includes special programs for children's groups and school classes as well as a spa park rally.

This is a nice opportunity for families to turn a walk into a little journey of discovery: Where does the brine come from? How does it become salt? And why has this story left so many traces here? Please check current dates and access options. Offers and contact of the Kunsthof.

We come back again and again – even to the festival of lights and culinary nights

We regularly go to the spa park. For us, this also includes the Festival of Lights and the Culinary Nights. Such occasions are part of our memories of this place - as are the quieter times between events.

At the Festival of Lights, the park has a different atmosphere: lighting, music and encounters turn the familiar paths into an evening meeting place. The events are each announced with their own program. Review of the 2025 Festival of Lights.

At the Culinary Nights, gastronomic offerings meet music and entertainment in the spa park. The program also includes the competition for the “Salty Wooden Spoon”. In 2026 the event took place on June 12th and 13th. These past dates are a review; Please check the current calendar for the next events. Review of the Culinary Nights 2026.

Our idea for a relaxed tour

Start with a look at the graduation tower and then find your way through the garden areas. It's better to plan time to look and ask questions rather than checking off as many stations as possible. With children, this can become a small search round: Who will be the first to discover a well, a special figure or a trace of salt history?

If you still have time and desire, the walk to the fir forest can be extended or combined with a booked Kunsthof offer. We would deliberately leave a separate block of time for a visit to the Solequell. Not everything has to fit into the same afternoon.

Our beautiful spa park shows how much there is to discover right on your doorstep. It combines local history with a place where you can simply stay for a while. We would like to make these kinds of places visible in our family blog.
